The Distance Record has Been Broken

The record was broken back in April, but I didn't hear about it until about a week ago.  Maybe you heard already(but if so you should have posted about it).  The old record was thrown with a dx Valkyrie ten years ago (which has sometimes made me question if the newer discs and plastics are better than the old ones).  It was 820'.  The new record is 836' and was set with a 134 gram blizzard champion Boss.
The new record holder, David Wiggins Jr. is only 16, so I am pretty sure we can out throw him if we practice a bit more.  so 836' is the new number to beat.  Everybody get to work!  (he probably can't putt anyways)

Blizzard Plastic

I haven't felt the need to purchase any new discs for the last year.  I have a lot and I have really enjoyed the Boss Stephen gave me for my birthday a few years ago as my driver, the buzz I got from an Elder last summer and the drone I found playing at West Lake Park two years ago as my midranges, and the Vibram Summit I got from Breta for Christmas a few years ago.  I have a Wahoo for my water disc and don't know what disc I would add that would improve my game.  Seems like it would just add weight to my bag.
Well that feeling has changed.  I am very much wanting to buy a disc right now.  Innova has a new plastic out called Blizzard Champion Plastic.  It has thousands of tiny air bubbles in it to make the disc lighter, without changing the flight characteristics.  You are supposed to be able to throw a disc 20 grams lighter than your normal disc, but have it feel and behave just like your normal weight, except that it goes further.
This might just be a novelty thing to make people go out and buy new discs, but it is working.  I can't wait to get one.  When I do, I'll let you know what I think.  I'm planning on getting a 150 gram Katana or DiscMania DD2 (DiscMania is Innova Europe).  They say testing shows that they float if you get them in weights lighter than 140 grams, but this R-Pro Boss was supposed to float too.

Super fun course in San Fransisco. Lots of elevation change and interesting fairways.

Start Practicing

The 80' putt Dad claims to have made :)
Congratulations to Dad for sinking this putt.  I am excited to play everyone again.  I think the scores are going to be close.  I need to get practicing.  I don't want to get beaten by Dad, or Jarom.

The Sidearm

I got to go Disc Golfing with Davey on Saturday, just the two of us.  He prefers a sidearm throw and I have been meaning to work on mine, so I threw only sidearms for the course.  It is a six hole course, so it doesn't take long, but it is fun.  I used the grip tips from Bugs that I posted earlier and had some really good throws.  I found this video by Avery Jenkins yesterday and am excited to try out his tips and some more grips.  He suggests 3 grips:

The split grip for precision shots
The Stacked Grip, which seems to be the one Bugs suggested.  It gives more power and is still precise.

And the power grip, not to be confused with giving someone the bird.
He gave three tips for most excellent throws and I have the summary here.
Hopefully these can help me and you improve our sidearm technique.  I recommend watching the video, he talks about his footwork and other interesting stuff.  You also get to see him throw a lot of really good shots.

Rumble in the Forest

December
2011
Cherry Hill
The ultimate disc golf game.  I've been hoping for a long time to get all of us together for a disc golf game and it finally happened.
6 Johnson men, 1 Johnson Jarom, and Ryan Pierce battled for the lowest score.
In the beginning the pack was tight.  The scores were close.
Even Brian started out at 0.

Eventually Stephen Pulled ahead, with Jared close behind.  Once they got a lead, it was hard to catch them.  Ryan Pierce also did very well.  I no longer remember everyone's scores, I just know Stephen won.

Rumble in the Forest Part 2

Hmmm...  I don't know what this is a picture of

Stephen, making me wish I'd waited another year to introduce him to disc golf.

Ryan, secretly practiced all year in hopes of coming to Cherry Hill and beating us all.  He beat me:(

Nate got extra style points for having the coolest hat.  He also played quite well.

Battling the blur, which came in last place

My New Bag

My new bag the "HD SCOUT" I wanted a smaller bag and thought it would be cool to make one out of an old pair of jeans. Jenna and her sister helped me with the sewing. There is a pocket on the front and back and belt loops on the sides for the strap made from an old belt. It can hold 9 or 10 discs
