Vibram Summit

Breta loves me! For our anniversary she got me a putter from a company I never knew made disc golf; (probably because they just released the first set this month) Vibram. I am so excited to try it out. The Hippie told her it throws a bit like a wizzard, is understable, fast, and awesome. Here's a pic of it. I've tried it out on my practice basket and sank the first 3 shots I made, can't wait to go try it on a real course.

Baby poses conflict to the 1st anual Hyzer Dragon Tournament

Well our new baby wants to make it in time for the Disc golf Tournament this summer. It is due to arrive on June 18th. My break from school, and when I am hoping to plan the tournament is June 19-July 11. With the baby coming then I might not be able to make it. Does everyone else want to have the tournament then without me? Do you want to move it back until the end of October (we might be risking bad weather then). Let me know, I deffinately want the tournament to go, with or without me and will help in planning it. Thanks!

Clash of the Titans

Stopped by Rexburg at the end of October and challenged Stephen to a round of disc golf. We teed off on the new Rexburg course and had a few good games. They were close and we each had some amazing shots, but in the end Stephen won the day. A rematch is in order.
The Rexburg course is a lot better than I thought it would be. It has some interesting shots and has some difficult skill shots.

Polo's or Tee's?

So I went out and bought some printable iron on paper so that I can make the first prototype HyzerDragon shirt. Now the question I am having is should I put it on tshirt, a polo or maybe a baseball shirt? Eventually when we make the shirts I think that we will want them somewhat uniform so I want to make one that everyone in the club would want to wear. What do you think? When I get some input I will make the shirt and see how it turns out, then I can post a pic of it and we can go from there.

Words from the Hippie

The Iron Lion is the local disc golf shop. It is a tiny store full of lots of discs. The prices are reasonable, Walmart's are a little better, but Walmart doesn't have the selection or the Hippie. The hippie is what I call the owner of the Iron Lion, he has dreads down to his waste and sells a line of clothes called hippie golf wear. He knows a ton about discs and is really interesting to talk to. Here are two things he's told us. 1# West Lake disc golf course (located here in Davenport) is one of the best courses in the country and the hippie has personally lost over 55 frisbees there in the 2 or so years since it was made (water hazzards galore). 2# Special class is awesome. Its the only disc golf the hippie has played in the last three weeks. Special class is played with frisbees that look more normal, i.e. the zephyr by innova. They don't go as far, are harder to control, and harder to stay in the basket.
I like other courses here better than westlake, but maybe that is because I am not a pro calliber player, I don't think super class sounds more fun, but hey, it could be. These are the words of the hippie.

RX Pro Boss

I went to pick my sidewinder up from the Iron Lion (which is named after a Bob Marley song) on Monday and couldn't resist purchasing an RX pro Boss. RX Pro is the new plastic Innova came out with this year. They are able to make discs much lighter with it, it is supposed to be pretty durable and grippy. It is more flexible than the other plastics. The main reason I got it is that if you get a Boss in under 150 g it can float. Someday I'll post a bunch of pictures of the water shots here and you will understand why a floating disc is so handy here. My disc is 150 g and bright orange so as to be easily spotted, so far I love it. Before I've had to switch from throwing a Wraith or a Boss to throwing a dragon on water holes. The Dragon flies a lot different than the other drivers. Now I swich from a boss to a boss, very nice. I think the RX pro might have further distance then my normal boss, but the wind tosses it around like nothing. If you are throwing around water I highly recomend you get one, it will save you so many discs.

The Prodigal Sidewinder

My Sidewinder has been missing for a few months. I don't know how I lost it. It either fell out of my bag or I forgot to pick it up after a throw because it simply vanished one day. Maybe it ran away because I didn't use it enough. I got a call a few days ago from a nice fellow who had found my disc on hole 7 of Camden 2. I've never played that far into Camden 2, so apparantly someone else has been playing with my disc and lost it also. The finder dropped it off at the local disc golf shop here, the Iron Lion, so I am going to pick it up tomorrow.

New Personal Best

I beat my old best score at Camden with some amazing puts a while ago. I was sinking all of them, but I've gone since and my magic putting did not continue on those days. I finished the course 5 under par and found a leopard, a fairway driver.

Camden

We got lost looking for a brand new course this morning and decided to play Camden (the course we were looking for, Camden 2, shares the parking lot with the first Camden. We were a few feet from it, but couldn't see it. It hasn't officially opened yet, but it is playable). Camden starts out with some really easy par 4 shots that you should be able to birdie. They are nice open shots on the grass, but with big elevation changes that make it more interesting than your average grassy park play. After about 5 holes you head into the woods. The trees and bushes are your enemies here and can hide your discs. Somebody cut the tops of some saprolings off, but left about 8" of sharpened spikes I tripped on and scratched my shins up a bit, but I survived. You stay in the woods for some tricky shots, but not too hard, until the last three holes which are back out on the green. It's a good course. Bret, one of the guys I went with, says it is his new favorite in the area (he got a -9 so he was pleased). I ended with -3, a new personal best at this course.
We tried the first 4 holes at Camden 2 when we finished. It is a tough course completely in the woods. Think Corbin with big ravines, tighter trees, more underbrush, awesome bridges, and 600' + shots. I'll tell you more about it when I play the whole thing.

Middle Park

We played the first 9 holes at Middle Park today. Dang it can be a tough course. My best score there is -1, today I got a lot higher. I like how many hills there are. They had the baskets all in different locations than I am used to (each basket has three locations). They have moved most of them into the most difficult positions; probably because of the Women's Tournament coming up. Half the course on a grassy park, and the back 9 is in the woods, kind of like Corbin.

Advice from Ken Climo

I read this back when I was buying my first discs, its what made me decide to get Breta a TeeBird. If the winningest guy uses them then they must be good. I thought you might enjoy his advice on driving, it is making more sense to me now then the first time I read it. http://www.kenclimo.com/howto_drive.htm

New World Record

I looked on Millennium's homepage and saw that the distance record for women was broken on Juloy 30 of this year. Some chick named Nyloofar Rahmani threw 153 meters (That's 501 ' and 11.62 "). So Breta, that is the number you have to beat. And hopefully the rest of us can throw that far too. Anyone know what the men's record is? I've heard of people throwing in the 800's. It's cool to hear about rercords being broken and see how far we are from them.

A Great Loss

While some mourn the passing of Senator Kennedy today I am feeling a much deeper and significant loss. On hole 3 at Eastern Avenue Park my second throw with my Star Wraith (a present from Breta) overshot the hole and landed in Duck Creek. It has been raining for the last several days so the Creek is higher and faster flowing than usual and perhaps even murkier than usual. I waded around searching with my feet for my prized disc, but to no avail. I get comfort knowing that its second throw overthrew a par 5 hole (an easy par 5, but a par 5 none the less). May it be found by an honest soul who calls my number on the disc.

(Aerobie) Epic Disappointment

So when Dad gave me the Epic disc I was very excited to try it because..well mainly it looks sweet but another reason was because of its tomahawk capabilities that I had heard of. Supposedly you can make this disc fly upside down for a full drive distance and then it will flip rightside up giving it a second life and going another long distance. I have read online on how to do this and heard people say that they have seen it done but I have never seen it done in person or even online. I've taken the Epic out to a football field and thrown it around bending it and trying to tweak it like described online but so far it has not been impressive in the slightest and I am starting to wonder if it is even worth the effort. So far I have to say that this Aerobie disc is just an Epic piece of crap. Has anyone ever seen someone make proper use of it?

New Personal Best

I got -3 at Eastern Avenue Park on Monday, beating my previous low score of -2. It is one of the easier courses here, has some par 5's that should be par 3, but also has some very difficult par 3 shots. On the third hole I got to jump into Duck Creek after two of the Elders threw their discs into the water. (floating discs have been a great investment for us here). We had a big thunder/rainstorm the night before so the creek was very full. I played the rest of the game completely soaked and got to jump in after one more disc on the back 9. Some of the tee's were completely under water, so it made for an interesting game. I double bogied the second to last hole and got my score to -1, thankfully I eagled the last hole and ended up with my -3. I'm pretty sure I'll beat that score soon. I've increased my distance a lot recently by adding more whip and some steps to my drive. I like the improvement.

Accesories

Breta had a good idea, well I think it is a good idea. After we make shirts we could go on to make scorecards, towels and such with our logo. Maybe we could do one thing a season or something. I don't know. Let me know what you think of my ideas.

Pictures

Do you have any pictures of you disc golfing? Send them to me to help beautify the site.

The Boss

I got a champion boss for my birthday from Stephen (thanks Stephen!). I really like it. It is a heavy disc, does very well in the wind, and have been getting it a little further than my Wraith when I have thrown them side by side. I'm really enjoying it. I've been discing with the elders lately and one of them bought an R-Pro boss, 150 g. It floats in the water and is much lighter and flexible than my boss. It feels thinner too, less substantial. More like a wraith, but too light for much wind. That is the next disc I plan on purchasing. Will probably be a while.

The shirts

The shirts are going to be cool, that is all I know about them. I think we should hire Jared (if he's not too expensive) to design our logo and shirt. We can include his fee, spread out through all of us, in the price of each shirt. Who is in for shirts? Sound good Jared (and everyone else)?

More members

OK, right now Stephen and I are the only ones I know for sure are in this club. We need more people.

Tournaments

Here is my idea on tournaments. I think it would be awesome to have a yearly tournament, starting next summer, with all of our members. We could have each member take a turn choosing the course we play at. I think we should have one of the Spokane people choose a Spokane course for the first tourney, we could probably all make it there. Maybe the next year we could go to Rexburg or Portland or where ever Stephen will be that summer and play there. Eventually we could have everyone come here to Davenport. I know it will be very difficult to get everyone in one place, but I think it will be fun. We'd each get a chance to be at a "home course" and have the advantage and we'd all get to play new courses instead of playing the same ones over and over. Plus we'd all get to hang out. Let me know if you think this is doable or if we would rather do a tournament in Washington every year. I love the courses here and would like everyone to get a chance to play them.

The Name

Hyzer Dragons is not set in stone. Do you have any suggestions on a better name? We want one that we could make a cool logo for and we wouldn't be ashamed of.

Disc Golf Club

So, Stevio had the idea to form a disc golf club. I liked the idea. We want to have cool shirts with logos, maybe have some tournaments, and talk about our favorite discs, courses, etc. It thought this site would be cool to list our personal bests on courses and stuff too. Post whatever you want.
